Like most family law attorneys, I charge by the hour plus any expenses. My hourly rate is $250. I request a retainer fee which is paid in advance and placed into a client trust account and drawn upon as work is performed. I provide regular statements of work performed and request payment on the statement, replenishing the trust account balance. Any monies left in the trust account at the conclusion of services is returned to the client.
Retainer fees vary depending on the facts of the case, but here are some examples: $3500 for a divorce, $2000 to request temporary orders or modify orders. A smaller retainer fee is requested for limited scope where the attorney is hired for piecemeal services such as to draft documents or provide legal advice.
