Karen S. Socher, Family Law Attorney

I practice family law exclusively so that I develop expertise in that area of law.  I aim to provide the highest level of legal representation.  California family law is vast with many complex parts, and the law is often changing and growing.  There is also the emotional aspect for the client.  It is gratifying to help people overcome the difficult challenges of family law.  I am tenacious, competitive, genuinely interested in the law, and I have strong people skills, all of which help make me a better litigator and negotiator.

My litigation experience includes trials, evidentiary hearings, various types of motions and requests for orders, requests for restraining orders, and other miscellaneous matters.  I have represented clients on complex matters, cases involving significant assets, cases involving hidden assets, and cases involving breach of fiduciary duty.  I am a proficient scrivener having drafted many agreements and other legal documents.  I have acted as a mediator for divorcing parties and on custody issues.  I enjoy trial work, but my first priority is to help my client reach his or her goal, whether it be through litigation or negotiation.

In general I maintain amicable communications with the opposing side, whether they are represented by counsel or not.  Civility generally wins over hostility, and one can be tough yet respectful at the same time.

I passed the bar in 2003 and took time off to raise a family.  Before settling in family law, I volunteered at the California Rural Legal Aid (CRLA) in Oxnard helping indigent people, and I worked for a law firm representing corporations in real estate matters.  I have been practicing family law exclusively since 2010.  I started out working at a family law firm in Beverly Hills and then moved to a larger firm in Woodland Hills, and then I started my own practice in Ventura.  Before law school I worked for many years for some of the top family law firms in Los Angeles where I gained valuable skills that help me to this day.

I earned my bachelor's degree at UCLA and my law degree at McGeorge School of Law.  I completed my last year of law school at Loyola Marymount where I worked at the California Appellate Court, Second district as an extern, which gave me insight into the judicial process in general, and the appellate process in particular.

In my free time I enjoy gardening, bike riding, snow skiing, spending time with family, and walking the dog.  I love animals and nature.

I was born and raised in Mar Vista, Los Angeles.  I moved to Ventura in 2004 and have been here since.  I have been a scorer for the Ventura County Mock Trials since 2012 and I am a current or former member of the following professional associations:

  • Ventura County Bar Association
  • Family Law Section of the VCBA
  • San Fernando Valley Bar Association
  • Family Law Section of the SFVBA
  • Ventura County Inns of Court
  • California State Bar Association
  • Family Law Section of CalBar
  • Solo Practitioner’s Section of CalBar.

I handle all areas of family law, including divorce, legal separation, paternity, spousal support, child support, child custody and visitation, property division and valuation, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, rights of nonmarital partners to enforce express or implied agreements for support or property sharing (Marvin claims), post-judgment matters, appeals, and domestic violence restraining orders.
